Description
Dental implants are the best option for teeth replacement because their integration with the jawbone means they are able to provide stable support. When mounted on dental implants, bridges, crowns, and dentures no longer shift or slip in the mouth, particularly when eating and talking.
Serving as a permanent anchor, replacement teeth feel more natural and, hence, also more comfortable. Another advantage of dental implants is that the teeth on either side of the lost tooth will no longer need to be ground down for attachment of ordinary bridges, dentures, or crowns.
Just like dentures, dental implants can be used to replace more than one tooth or the entire upper or lower arch. A patient can also have multiple implants in different locations.
Treatment with dental implants has two stages:
- Surgical. A patient will undergo surgery to have the implants inserted into the jawbone. The portion of the implants inserted into the bone is called the rod or anchor. Anchors are made out of surgical titanium and are designed to last for life. It can take up to six months for the titanium rod implants to completely fuse with the bone. The replacement fittings, i.e., crowns, bridges, or dentures will not be attached until the implants have completely bonded with the bone structure.
- Restorative. Once the implants have fused and bonded with the jawbone, the restorative work of installing the replacement teeth begins. The replacement teeth will be made to fit onto the implant posts – the top/exposed part – attached to the implant anchors – or the rods. The artificial replacement teeth are often made from high-grade porcelain fused to precious metal or titanium.
In cases wherein several teeth with important function are replaced with implants, the patient can use temporary dentures while waiting for the implants fuse with the bone and until the permanent artificial teeth are fitted.
